ARE YOUR PLANT LEAVES TURNING YELLOW AND FALLING OFF?
YELLOW LEAVES IN PLANTS
Yellowing leaves on your houseplants can be caused by a number of conditions. Sometimes the cause is obvious, which means that you can diagnose and fix it immediately. There are other times when the problem is more of a mystery. In these cases, you'll need to try changing one thing at a time until you see improvement in your plant.
When you see leaves turning yellow, it’s time for you to find the possible cause and solution. Among the reasons why plant leaves are yellow are environmental conditions, cultural reasons, pests or disease, and even the medium in which the plant grows.
COMMON REASONS FOR LEAVES TURNING YELLOW
- Yellowing leaves on plants may often be a sign of too little or too much water which can affect plant performance. You should water just enough to keep the soil moist, not soggy.
- Your plant may also be located in too much light where it is scorching, or too little light where it is fading due to an inability to photosynthesize properly. In this case, remove the damaged leaves and change the location of the plant.
- Age is another cause when plant leaves are yellow. It is quite usual for many types of plants to lose the older leaves as the new ones arrive. Older foliage will turn yellow and often wither before it drops off.
- Nutrition Deficiency: Plant leaves may also turn yellow if a plant is not receiving all of the nutrients it requires. You may assume that your plant is getting all the nutrients it needs from the soil, but if the leaves are turning yellow, it may indicate a nutrient deficiency that’s interfering with photosynthesis. Use good quality, well-draining potting soil.
- Sucking insects attack plants inside and outside. Mites, Aphids, Mealybugs, Thrips, Scale, and Whiteflies these insects are robbing the plant of its sap, which is the lifeblood of the plant. The plant’s response is a reduction in overall health including stippled and yellowing leaves. Leaves may crinkle at the edges and fall off. To know how to get rid of the insects click here.
HOW TO TREAT YELLOW LEAVES PROBLEM
-
Epsom Salt: Epsom salt is a natural mineral, made of hydrated Magnesium Sulphate, it improves major nutrients(Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Potassium) uptake from the soil, neutralizes soil pH thereby combating yellowing in plants.
Add 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt in 1 gallon of water and spray this solution onto your plants
-
NPK Fertilizer: Since NPK is organic it can also be mixed into the soil or can be used as a foliar spray by diluting it with water.
Foliar spray: Mix 2- 4 grams of NPK 19:19:19 per liter of water, for All crops, flower crops, vegetables, plantation, indoor & outdoor plants. For best result spray this solution once every 15 days.
or
Add 5 to 10 grains of NPK for smaller pots, 10 to 15 grains for medium-sized pots, and 15 to 20 grains for larger pots, if your plants are in-ground use 20 to 30 grains or 1/4th tablespoon of NPK crystal fertilizer on the topsoil of your potted plants. They are water-soluble, as you keep watering your plants, the NPK slowly dissolves in water and enters the soil and the roots take up these elements. For best results repeat this process once every 15 days.
