WHAT IS A RUST DISEASE?
Rust fungi are very easy to identify on the plant. The disease can be characterized by a rust color on plant leaves and stems. The rust will start out as flecks and will eventually grow into bumps. The plant rust will most likely appear on the underside of the leaves of the plant.
Even though it rarely kills plants, it reduces a plant’s health, vigor, and flower production.
HOW TO PREVENT RUST DISEASE
For rust fungi, prevention is the best defense.
- Select rust-resistant plant varieties when available.
- Rust thrives in a wet environment, so do not overwater your plants. Water plants in the morning, not at night, so they will dry off from the sun and don’t stay wet for too long.
- Dust your plants with sulfur early in the season to prevent infection or to keep mild infections from spreading.
- Space your plants properly to encourage good air circulation inside the branches and around the plant itself. This will help it dry its leaves faster.
- Good quality and well-draining potting soil prevent most of the disease from occurring. As a preventive method, loosen the soil in the root of the plant. Prepare the mix of Epsom Salt + Bone Meal + Vermi Compost. Put this in the root and mix with soil and give water regularly as per plant's water need.
HOW TO TREAT RUST DISEASE
- Remove all infected parts of plants and destroy them. Do not use infected plant debris to compost.
- Clean away all debris in between plants to prevent rust from spreading. Make sure to disinfect your pruning tools after each cut.
- Take one liter water and mix 5 ML of organic Neem Oil & 5 ML bath shampoo mix them well in the water. Spray that solution on every leaf until it's fully wet. Repeat this spraying every week for few weeks.
- SAAF is a systemic and contact fungicide that is used to prevent and treat Leaf Spot Blast disease and Rust disease in all vegetable plants. It is highly effective and helps protect the plant for a lengthy period of time. It is applied by mixing 1 gram of Saaf with 1 liter of water and spraying over the treated crops. Can be used for both indoor and outdoor purposes.
- Hydrogen Peroxide is an affordable and effective way to treat rust. Add 2-3 Tbsp of hydrogen peroxide per gallon of water. Spray that solution on every leaf until it's fully wet. Repeat this spraying every week for few weeks.
